The Department manages 85 governments, 44 aided and 170 private polytechnics, 14 govt Engineering Colleges and 6 Junior Technical Schools.

Its primary function is planning of developing Technical Education in the state and the Board of Technical Examination is responsible to conduct Diploma/Post diploma /Tailoring examination and award Diploma/Post Diploma/certificate to the eligible candidates.
